Gems

Have you ever went rock hunting? Have you ever found a "special" rock?  You may have found a gem! Gems can be all colors, even black! Gems can be many prices, they can range from a couple of bucks to millions! They can be soft or very, very hard.  A gem is a kind of rock. There are many kinds of gems, but more kinds of ordinary rocks! Some gems can be very hard to find.  Gems are mostly found underground.  There is a gem called an emerald and is green. It is very rare and expensive.  It is worth more money than diamond!

There is a city called Ratnapura. Ratnapura means "city of gems".  It is a large producer of gems.  There is also a gem called sapphire. It can be a few colors, they can be blue, yellow, .  What makes up sapphire are aluminum-oxide with a little iron.  Naturally blue sapphire are the most valuable.  Some people artificially turn sapphire blue.It is less valuable.  There is a crystal called benitoite, it is rare.  There is also a gem called quartz. It makes up 12 percent of earth's crust.
